Default The summer desert can be a dangerous place...

...best to ride the cool, high country. Here are a couple of old photographs I stumbled across while cleaning up over the holidays. California Volunteer cavalry taken by surprise just west of Yuma and on an Apache scout along the Mogollon Rim in Arizona.

An initial recon of the route was done about a month ago and a follow-up
is planned for September or October to finalize some route sections.
An initial web site will be up within about 7 - 10 days.
For various reasons - mostly logistical - the impression will be infantry, more
specifically Co. E., First California Volunteer Infantry. Uniform guidelines will
be based on Carlton's General Order No. 3.

Thanks John
I'm assuming that cavalry is still invited as well? I will wait for the web site to come out.
Thanks again

well - kind of hoping that Sean - aka Cpl Bell would note this and respond - but since he hasn't.

For better or for worse (and I guess this could change) - for now the
March will be a straight infantry event - Co. E., 1st Cal. Vol. Infantry.

Web site is currently being reviewed by the organizers (for typos, gramerical
errors, etc.) - so the site's address should be made available in about another
week.

Unhappy Limited oppertunity

Well John I do hope it changes. Cavalry events are non existant here in the west and I would hate to mis a training oppertunity for my mount . I would offer to bring them as pack animals but I do not have any pack saddles. If someone offers one up I might accomidate.
Looking forward to seeing the registration site.
Thanks

A bit later that hoped for - but (and still a work in progress).

Registration is expected to open in late September or early October.

Thanks John.
Currently I am now unsure if I will be attending due to the lack of Infantry accoutraments. I'll see.
Thanks Again

This link is to a diary for a man who served in Co. G, 1st California Vol. Inf.
The diary was written during his trek through Southern California with the section 1862-09 covering the desert areas.

Thanks for the link. Should be useful for additional background on California volunteers. However
it seems to be for a soldier in Co. C, 4th CA Vol. Infantry - so not directly part of Carlton's
march.
