Is it known if the State Armorer marked all weapons issued to volunteers? Do any of those records still exist and where would they be retained......?

There are a few documents from 1860 relating to the State Armorer at
the State Archives. According to the finding aid of the Indian War
Papers, there is one letter regarding a “load of ordinance and load of
stores and equipment sent from Carson City,” as well as a “series of
accounts and bills for transporting arms to and from armory at
Benicia.”

I looked at them on my lunch break, but they did not appear to contain
any info regarding weapon markings. I wouldn’t be surprised if there
are more letters here in the correspondence of the Adjutant General,
although searching through them could be very time consuming and labor
intensive for the researcher. I did stumble upon one letter in there
from the US War Department to Governor Stanford dated October 24, 1862
that reads in part “a large part of the arms and ordinance supplies
for the troops…from your state, having been issued by the State
Authorities, it is necessary…that you should furnish as soon as
possible to this Department, a return showing…the number and
description of arms and accoutrements, and other ordinance stores
issued…the calibre of the small arms should be stated and whether they
are rifled or smooth; whether they are of American of European
manufacture, and the name by which each kind of arm is commonly
designated…”
